Redesign Any Room With ChatGPT
Upload a photo of a room and get a designer style redesign that keeps the furniture you already own, then have the whole look rebuilt on a budget with somewhere to buy each piece.
Interior design advice is usually generic, because nobody giving it has seen your room. This works because you hand ChatGPT the actual room. Two prompts, used in the same conversation: the first restyles the space, the second rebuilds that look on a budget and tells you where to buy each piece.
Before you start
- Take a photo of the room on your phone. Shoot it in daylight, from a corner, so as much of the space as possible is in frame.
- Open a new ChatGPT conversation and upload the photo.
- Paste the first prompt below and fill in the square brackets.
1. The redesign
Here is a photo of my [living room / bedroom / kitchen]. Redesign this space the way a professional interior designer would. Keep every piece of furniture I already own, but rework the layout, the colours, the lighting and the finishing touches. What I dislike about it now is [what bothers you]. Show me the redesign as an image of this exact room, then explain what you changed and why.Keeping the existing furniture is the instruction that makes the result usable. Leave it out and you get a showroom full of things you do not own and would have to buy.
2. The budget rebuild
Now recreate this whole look on a budget of [your number]. List every piece I would need to buy, with a price for each, and tell me where to buy it. Group the list by priority, so I can see what changes the room most for the least money. Keep the items I already own out of the list.Stay in the same conversation so it is working from the redesign it just produced. That is what turns a picture into a shopping list you can act on.
Getting a better result
- Say what you dislike about the room as it is. A clear constraint beats a description of your taste every time.
- Give it a real budget number. Without one it invents a figure and designs to that instead.
- Ask for two or three directions, then pick the closest and push on that one rather than starting again.
- Mention anything fixed that cannot move, such as a radiator, a window seat or a socket, or the layout it suggests may be impossible.
- Ask it to keep one thing you love exactly as it is, so the redesign still feels like your room.
Worth knowing
The product links are the weak point. Models produce plausible looking URLs, and stock changes anyway, so treat the list as a shopping brief and search for each item yourself instead of clicking straight through.
The image it gives back is an impression of the space rather than a plan. Measure the room and the furniture before you buy anything.
