How to See and Delete What Claude Remembers About You
Check what Claude's memory has saved about you, edit or delete it, and keep a single chat out of memory.
Claude can remember things about you from your chats, so you don't have to repeat yourself. That's handy, but it's good to know what it has saved. This guide shows you how to see what Claude remembers, change it or delete it, and keep a single chat out of memory.
Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max plans. If you've never looked at it, it's worth a quick check.
1. Open your memory settings
Go to Settings, then Memory. Everything Claude remembers about you is listed under Topics. Have a read through the list so you know what's there.
2. Edit or delete a topic
Select a topic to open it. Use the edit icon to change what it says, for example if something is out of date. If you don't want Claude to keep it at all, tap Delete to remove it.
3. Ask Claude in a chat
You don't have to use Settings every time. You can tell Claude in a chat to remember, change or forget something. Type it the way you'd say it. To remove something, say:
Please forget what I told you about my old job.To update something, start with:
Please change what you remember about me. I now work as a teacher, not in retail. To add something, say:
Please remember that I prefer short answers with bullet points.4. Keep one chat out of memory
If you want a single chat that won't be remembered, do this before you send your first message. Tap the "+" in the message box, then turn Memory off for that chat.
Or use an incognito chat instead. Look for the ghost icon. Incognito chat is available on all plans.
Good to know
- Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max.
- Sensitive topics, like health, religion or politics, aren't stored by default. There's a toggle called "Include sensitive topics in memory", and it's off unless you turn it on.
- Some things are never saved, like government ID numbers.
- The "+" menu only works for a chat before you send your first message. Once you've started, open a new chat.
- You can also pause or reset memory entirely if you'd rather start again.
- Menu names and icons can change as the app updates. If something looks different, check the official help page below.
