4 Claude Code Plugins That Cut Your Token Usage

Four free add-ons for Claude Code and Codex that make your usage limits last longer: Ponytail, OmniRoute, Graphify and Agent Skills, with install steps and links.

If you keep hitting your usage limit while vibe coding, these four free add-ons attack the problem from different angles. One writes less code, one swaps to a free model when your limit hits, one stops the agent re-reading your files, and one gives it the habits of a senior engineer. Install any of them on its own, or all four together.

1. Ponytail: write less code

Ponytail is a ruleset that makes your agent behave like the laziest senior developer in the room. Before writing anything, it climbs a checklist: is there a native feature, a standard library call or an existing function that already does this? The author's benchmark reports around half as many lines of code and around a fifth lower cost on real sessions, with safety checks kept.

Prompt
/plugin marketplace add DietrichGebert/ponytail
/plugin install ponytail@ponytail

For Codex, use the same two commands with the codex prefix: codex plugin marketplace add DietrichGebert/ponytail, then codex plugin add ponytail@ponytail.

2. OmniRoute: almost unlimited usage

OmniRoute connects Claude Code to hundreds of other free AI providers. The moment your Claude limit hits, it switches to the next best model on its own, so your session carries on. It also compresses your prompts before they are sent, so each message uses far fewer tokens and you still get the same answer back.

  1. Open the OmniRoute site and follow the install steps for your system.
  2. Connect it to Claude Code when prompted.
  3. Keep working. Model switching and compression happen in the background.

3. Graphify: stop re-reading files

Graphify turns your whole codebase, including docs, configs and database schemas, into a knowledge graph the agent can query. Instead of re-reading files again and again to work out how things connect, it asks the graph. On large projects the savings are big. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI.

  1. Clone the Graphify repo from GitHub.
  2. Run the graphify command in your project root to build the graph.
  3. Use the /graphify slash command in Claude Code to query it. Strict mode makes the agent use the graph before reading raw source.

4. Agent Skills: code like a senior engineer

Agent Skills is a pack of 24 production-grade engineering skills by Addy Osmani, an engineering director at Google. It covers the whole lifecycle: planning, coding, testing, reviewing and shipping. The agent activates the right skill at the right stage on its own, so it plans before it builds and tests before it says it is done. It installs into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and dozens of other agents.

  1. Open the repo and follow the one-line install for your agent.
  2. Start a task as normal. The skills switch in as the work moves from planning to coding to testing.

Which one first

If you hit limits mid-session, start with OmniRoute. If your bill is high but you never get cut off, start with Ponytail. If your project is large, add Graphify. Add Agent Skills once the others are in and you want better quality, not just lower cost.
